Lake Chapel

This is a stopping point (a focus) for pilgrims traveling along the Via Francigena. In Latin, focus means "hearth." Spiritual first, then material. The pilgrim center and the umbrella lighthouse in ruins of the chapel make up this focal point. The unfurled umbrella, lifted from beneath the earth, becomes the roof in the rain and burning heat, and it works as a lighthouse at night. Hidden in the ground is pilgrim center with rooms, an auditorium, a dining hall, and restrooms. Twenty-four clay light lanterns mark the way. The visual succession of lanterns represent the pilgrims' path.
